ReplyDelete- This is the group led by Aldric Constantino. We are doing our project on Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Specifically, we will be focusing on West Philadelphia.
ReplyDelete- The population of Philadelphia is 1,447,395. The median household income is $36,976. The percent of people below the poverty line is 24.1%, and the unemployment rate is 10.3%.
- Hunger for individuals and households with children in Philly is caused by unemployment, low wages, and substance abuse. Varying reasons such as mental illness, a lack of needed services, a lack of affordable housing, poverty, and substance abuse once again causes homelessness here as well.
- There are 4 types of environments dealing with the subject of poverty. The first is the physical and built environment that addresses the conditions of buildings, the pedestrian friendly factor of the city, etc. The second is social environment that addresses crime rates, racial integration, etc. The third is economic environment that addresses unemployment rates, affordable housing, etc. The fourth is service environment that addresses family support services, childcare, etc.
- Charity is direct service to help individuals to meet their needs such as donating, serving in soup kitchens, and sponsoring a refugee family. Justice is more of dealing with a political issue in order to make social and structural changes in order to correct long-term problems in communities.
- Amanda Ang and Athenie Galvez are also in the group by the way.
Boston Summary
ReplyDeleteHi, nice to meet you AP Stat partner. Our group is studying Boston, Massachusetts.
The population of Boston is 613,411.
The precent of people below poverty line is 18.7%. (114,708 people)
The unemployment rate in Boston is: 8.7%. (53,367 people)
The homelessness rate is (ID shelter, tent cities?): 11% decline in the use of homeless shelters, attributed to success in finding permanent housing.
Boston received $8.2 million in Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) funding in 2009.
Last year, the homeless street count in Boston was 219 men and women, up 19 percent from 184 in 2007, according to census figures. The full-city homeless census for 2008, which includes people on the streets and in shelters, hospitals, and hotels and motels, counted 7,681 - up 11 percent from 6,930 in 2007.
The city has seen a great reduction in violent crime since the early 1990s. Boston's low crime rate over the past decade or so has been credited to the Boston Police Department's collaboration with neighborhood groups and church parishes to prevent youths from joining gangs. There are 602 crimes per square mile per year, and the national median is around 42. You are 2 times more likely to be a victim of violent crime in Boston compared to the entire nation.
Charity is a short term solution for individuals, whereas justice is a long term solution for the entire community.
13% of Boston's population commutes by foot.
31.6% of people travel by public transportation. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) provides service from 175 cities and towns into Boston with 1.2 million boardings daily, the fourth largest mass transit system in the country. With a deep-water port, international airport, radial highways and rail lines that connect regional cities and towns to national and international destinations and markets, Boston makes the region’s growing role in the global economy possible. New England gas prices have already jumped 31% in the past year, averaging $3.67 per gallon.
Deep Ellum, Texas, where the poverty rate is very high for such a small population (.6% of people in Texas live in the area) at around 41-45%. Unemployment is 8.5%, which leads to the homeless rate at 36%. One main cause would be faling wages, since businesses are losing customers and people are moving out of this neighborhood, since the past vibe is missing and lost from this once vibrant neigborhood. This would be a social environment since Deep Ellum has a history of people coming to see the rich culture and music in this neighborhood. Crime is always an issue here, and although it has declined in the past, crime is still a big issue. Charity is when people come together to help others, ie. giving people food and even helping them with struggles in their lives. Justice is when people are fighting to keep people to live with enough food and housing to live sustainable lives.Deep Ellum started out as a warehouse district, quickly becoming an entertainment hot spot. It was were some aspiring jazz artists, such as Blind Lemon, who started to play here. Deep Ellum was a big hotspot for music and entertaiment, but slowly started to fade because of crime, and other factors.
